Dragon Fruit Vine Cutting - Care Guide
PLANT OVERVIEW
This variety is Hylocereus undatus, often called white dragon fruit or pitahaya. The fruits have vibrant red/pink skin and white flesh that is mildly sweet and often enjoyed fresh or in smoothies. These are self-fertile cuttings, which means one plant can set fruit on its own when mature, making it perfect for small spaces, patios, balconies, or a single backyard trellis.
Each order includes LIVE ROOTED VINE CUTTINGS, taken from mature, healthy mother plants on our South Florida farm. Because they are already rooted, they typically establish faster than unrooted cuttings, giving you a strong start.
LIGHT & TEMPERATURE
Dragon fruit is a sun-loving tropical cactus.
- For outdoor growing, it does best in USDA Zones 10–11, where winters stay warm and frost-free.
- For indoor growing, place it in a very bright location, such as a south-facing window or under strong grow lights.
It prefers warm temperatures, generally between 65°F and 90°F. Try to protect the plant from temperatures below 40°F and avoid frost. In very hot climates, a bit of afternoon shade can help prevent sunburn on the stems.
WATER & SOIL
Dragon fruit is a cactus, but it still needs regular water while it is actively growing.
- Use a well-draining cactus or succulent mix or a soil mix with added perlite or sand.
- Water deeply but allow the top of the soil to dry slightly between waterings.
- Avoid leaving the pot sitting in water, as constant wet roots can cause rot.
FRUIT, GROWTH & SUPPORT
With the right light, warmth, soil, and support, these cuttings can grow into a large climbing cactus, often 15–20 feet tall when trained on a strong trellis, post, or support structure. As the plant matures, it can begin to flower and set fruit, rewarding your patience with beautiful, night-blooming flowers and unique fruit.
