Dragon Fruit Plant - Care Guide
PLANT OVERVIEW
This variety is Hylocereus undatus, often called white dragon fruit or pitahaya. It produces vibrant red/pink-skinned fruits with sweet white flesh, enjoyed fresh, in fruit bowls, or blended into smoothies. The plant is SELF-FERTILE, which means a single mature plant can set fruit by itself, making it ideal for patios, balconies, and small gardens where you may only have space for one plant.
Because this is a LIVE POTTED PLANT, it has already passed the most delicate rooting stage. That means less transplant shock, easier care, and faster early growth once you place it in its new spot at home.
LIGHT & TEMPERATURE
White dragon fruit is a sun-loving tropical cactus that needs plenty of light to grow well.
- Outdoors, it thrives in USDA Zones 10–11, where winters are warm and frost-free.
- Indoors, place the plant in a very bright location, such as a south-facing window or under strong grow lights.
The ideal temperature range is usually 65°F to 90°F. Try to protect the plant from temperatures below 40°F and avoid frost. In very hot climates, a bit of light afternoon shade can help prevent the stems from burning.
WATER, SOIL & SUPPORT
Even though dragon fruit is a cactus, it still needs regular water during active growth.
- Keep it in WELL-DRAINING SOIL, such as a cactus or succulent mix, or potting soil with added perlite or sand.
- Water deeply, then allow the top of the soil to dry slightly before watering again. Avoid letting the pot sit in water, since constant moisture can cause root rot.
As it grows, your plant will become a climbing cactus that benefits from a strong support, such as a trellis, post, or sturdy frame. In the ground in warm climates, mature plants can reach 15–20 feet tall with the right structure. Over time, they can produce large, night-blooming flowers followed by white-fleshed dragon fruits.
